I hope a few of you were able to watch the Discovery channel on Sunday night. They have a new show called Discovery Atlas and it focuses on a different country each week. This week it was all about Brasil!!
In general, it was interesting. They chose seven different people and showed their lives in order to represent the country from a personal perspective. They chose a good variety of people from various regions, and for each person represented, it seemed to be what we would expect.
The challenge in a country such as Brasil is to be able to show such a complex and varied country via seven people in two hours. There was so much that could have been shown that was not. But I guess that's what you get from such a diverse country that is developing. There is poverty, yes, but there is also great richness and plenty of middle-class. Each and every state is unique and has its own culture. And there are so many ways that the country is influencing the world and participating in the world market, and it is so rich in so many cultures.
I will say, my one negative comment is that the voice over narrative speaker slaughtered so many portuguese words. And the narrative seemed to have been translated by someone British, which I found odd.
Overall, it was good, but not all inclusive and it was not so much of a school lesson on a country, but a peek into people's lives from a different country.
