Bats!

Back in the middle of September there was as big bat event on campus. We thought it sounded interesting so we went. We sat in on a session that taught us the basics about bats by a guy that is internationally known and has been on numerous tv programs. He was very good to listen to and we got to see 4 different bats. So, here is what we learned:

Bats are good because they eat up bad insects, spread seeds and help pollinate.



There are two types of bats. Small bats and big bats. The small bats are the insect eaters. They have tiny eyes and really big ears. The big bats have regular looking eyes and small ears. They eat fruit only, and are mostly in more tropical regions. There is at least one species of bats that does feed on blood... but they are not in the US and they do not actually kill the animal... but they will have a small meal and go on their merry way (much like mosquitoes like to do with humans I suppose)





It was pretty interesting and neat to see them up close.
